When to use it
BIRP puts the client’s observable behavior first, then ties each intervention to how the client responded. It fits behavioral health, substance use and skills-based work where payers want proof that the service did something. Pick it over GIRP when the session was driven by what showed up that day rather than by a set goal.
Example
Fictional example
Behavior
J.T., 37, 70 days sober from alcohol. Arrived on time, tense, jaw clenched. Reported strong cravings after a family barbecue where drinks were offered. Did not drink. Rated craving 7 out of 10 at peak.
Intervention
Reviewed the barbecue as a chain of triggers, thoughts and actions. Practiced urge surfing. Role-played a short refusal line for her uncle.
Response
Identified hunger and her uncle’s teasing as key triggers. Delivered the refusal line with more confidence on the third try. Craving rated 3 out of 10 by session end.
Plan
Weekly sessions. Attend two peer support meetings this week. Eat before social events. Bring a list of July gatherings next visit.
